Why You Should Book Your Newborn Photography Session Early

One of the questions I am asked most often is, “When should I book my newborn session?” Here I will explain why you should book your Newborn Photography Session early.

The simple answer is: before your baby arrives.

As a newborn photographer based in Greystones, Co. Wicklow, I recommend booking your newborn photography session any time from your 20-week scan onwards. Booking during pregnancy gives you the best chance of securing a session during those precious early weeks and allows everything to be planned well in advance.

Many parents assume they need to wait until their baby is born before arranging photographs. In reality, booking ahead means one less thing to think about once your little one arrives and ensures your baby’s first portraits are already taken care of. Short and Sweet Newborn

The Best Time for Newborn Photography

Newborn sessions are typically photographed within the first two weeks of life.

During this stage, babies tend to sleep more deeply, curl naturally into those beautiful newborn poses and are generally more settled during the session. While I can and do photograph older newborns, those early days are often ideal for capturing the classic newborn images many parents love.

Because this window is relatively short, leaving your booking until after your baby arrives can sometimes mean limited availability.

How My Booking Process Works

When you book a newborn session with me, I reserve a session date based on your due date plus 10 days. This gives us a provisional date in the diary while still allowing plenty of flexibility.

Of course, babies rarely arrive exactly when expected, so that date is never set in stone. Whether your baby arrives early, late or right on time, I will adjust your session date accordingly and guarantee to fit you in within your baby’s first two weeks.

Once your baby is born, you simply get in touch and we confirm the most suitable date for your session.

This approach gives you the reassurance of having a date reserved while also ensuring your baby’s arrival dictates the final timing.

More Choice and Less Stress

Booking early gives you more flexibility when it comes to choosing a session date and time.

The weeks leading up to your baby’s arrival are often busy enough with appointments, preparations and endless to-do lists. Knowing your newborn photography session is already organised means one less thing to think about once your baby is here.

Many parents tell me how relieved they felt knowing their session was already secured and they could simply focus on settling into life with their new arrival.

Planning Your Session in Advance

Booking early also gives us time to discuss what you’d like from your session.

My newborn sessions are designed to create a beautiful gallery that includes not only photographs of your baby, but also family and sibling portraits where appropriate.

We can talk about colours, styling, family photographs and how you would like your finished images to look in your home. Whether you’re considering framed wall art, an album or a collection of prints, having those conversations before baby arrives makes the entire experience feel much more relaxed.

Newborn Sessions Are Baby-Led

One concern I hear from expectant parents is whether their baby will cooperate on the day.

The truth is that every baby is different, and that’s completely normal.

My sessions are calm, unhurried and entirely baby-led. With years of experience photographing newborns, I allow plenty of time for feeding, cuddles, settling and comforting whenever needed.

There is never any expectation for your baby to perform or fit into a rigid timetable. The session is designed around them.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

Every year I receive enquiries from parents who have already welcomed their baby and are hoping to arrange a session immediately. Sometimes I can accommodate these requests, but availability is never guaranteed.

Booking during pregnancy, ideally from your 20-week scan onwards, is the best way to ensure your baby’s first portraits are captured during those precious early days without the added stress of trying to find availability after the birth.

If you’re expecting and would like to learn more about my newborn photography sessions, I’d love to hear from you.

I am a newborn and family photographer based in Greystones, Co. Wicklow, welcoming families from across Wicklow, Dublin and the surrounding areas.
