One of the most common things I hear from mums in the studio and when talking about having family portraits taken is that they are not happy with how they look and don’t want to be in the picture. So I wrote this little piece to persuade you all to have the photo taken! Get mum in the shot!

5 Reasons why you should be in the photos!

  1. If you don’t do it for yourself, then please do it for your children

Imagine your child in 10 years time looking through a family album and not finding any photos of you in it. Now, picture your child looking at a photo of you looking at him/her with a smile on your face and love in your eyes. Which situation do you think will make them feel loved and as part of a family?

  1. We Don’t have to print it huge!!

One of the things I am always saying to my mums who say they don’t want to be in any photographs is just because we take the picture doesn’t mean we have to print it 6 foot wide and hang it on your living room wall! These images are for you and whether you choose to share them with anyone else of keep them just for you, that is 100% your choice, but at least you will have the choice!

  1. It doesn’t have to be a traditional portrait

There are lots of ways we can capture beautiful images of you with your child or children without having everyone in a line smiling at the camera. The skill of a professional photographer is that they will have the experience and vision to capture something unique and special that captures your relationship with your child.

Mum in the shot

  1. Children love to see pictures of their parents, grandparents and great grandparents

When was the last time you picked up a treasured old photo of your mum, grandmother or great grandmother and said, “oh, I really wish she’d lost 10 pounds before she had that picture taken”…. Never!

  1. You’ll never get this time back.

Children are little for such a short time and you’ll never get that time back. Have pictures taken of you and your most precious little people as you are now and capture your unique relationship in an image you will both treasure, I promise!

So please… Whether it’s with me, an other professional photographer, get in front of the camera and enjoy it! Your children will never look at them saying “I wish you waited until you lost a bit more weight” and you might be surprised and actually love and cherish those images years from now.

Last tip? Get them printed!! Technology is not always reliable, and those memories are not replaceable. So always backup your photos and PRINT your favourites so you actually get to look at them.
